The MailTotal Antivirus E-mail Service combines the
comprehensive virus detection of MailTotal Antivirus
with the specialized e-mail security scanner FireNet
to provide maximum protection against viruses,
Trojans and unknown threats.
MailTotal Antivirus recognizes almost 68,000
different viruses and Trojans, as well as providing
a powerful neural network and set of heuristics for
detecting new threats. Many of the known viruses can
be automatically disinfected, allowing the rest of
the message to safely arrive at its destination.
The FireNet searches message headers, body and
attachments for unusual or inconsistent data which
could confuse e-mail readers and cause security
risks. It can also enforce per-user accept/deny
policies for attachment types, Javascript and HTML
content, thus eliminating whole classes of security
risks - protecting not only against viruses and
Trojans but also against malicious attacks
tailor-made for industrial espionage or vandalism.
The MailTotal Antivirus service provides a number of
basic security policies, each of which can be
customized either on a company-wide or per-recipient
basis. This allows companies and organizations to
tailor their security policies to fit their needs -
providing maximum protection with minimal
interruption of normal work-flow.
For example, if only one user on the network needs
to receive executable attachments (the most common
carriers of viruses) to get his or her work done,
then significant risk may be avoided by not allowing
others to receive such files.
Central to the MailTotal Antivirus security strategy
is the Message Quarantine and Backup, which both
store copies of original, unmodified messages. A
simple web-based interface enables subscribers to
navigate within these message storages, allowing
them to resend individual messages as necessary.
Customers are invariably very relieved to be able to
resend recently backed-up messages in the event of a
disk crash or a mistakenly deleted message. The
web-based interface to the message Backup is much
more accessible and easy to use for most people than
the traditional tape-based backup systems.
The Quarantine stores only copies of messages which
violate the company's stated security policies,
allowing administrators to grant individual messages
an exception from said policies in the event that a
conservative security policy causes a false alarm
and detains a important message unnecessarily.
Note: Some of the features discussed above are only
available to SecureActive or SecurePlus customers.
